WEDDING PHOTOJOURNALISM CONTEST: ISPWP FALL 2015 PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST

This has been an incredible week, and I am truly thankful.  I won FOUR awards in the Wedding Photojournalist Association’s Q4 Photography Contest and one award from The International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers, both international organizations of the best wedding photographers in the world.

I love this category, The Decisive Moment, a term defined by photojournalism pioneer Henri Cartier-Bresson:

“The decisive moment, it is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as the precise organization of forms which gives that event its proper expression.”– Henri Cartier-Bresson –

Award winning Chicago wedding photographer Candice C. Cusic

I teach my students that one of the best things we can do as photographers is to compose and wait for magic.  When all the pieces come together in one photograph, I can feel it when I hit the shutter.  I felt it here, shooting Andrea and David’s Chicago wedding photographs at Gallery 1028.  Andrea’s custom lilac wedding dress, the composition of her family members and the priceless expression of what every woman feels trying to jump off a stoop in heels and a dress turns up the magic factor in this image.  If I had put my camera down after shooting the family formal photographs, I never would have discovered this.  Now, it’s one of my favorite wedding photographs.

PHOTOGRAPHERS: I have spots available for my Moment-Driven Photojournalism Workshops this April 4-5 and September 15-16.  This intimate workshop (limited to only 10 students) is designed to recharge your photography. If you’re shooting the same thing each week, the same way … I can help.  This is a shooting workshop where you will step outside our comfort zone, focus on capturing moments and remember why you first picked up a camera.  You will also photograph strangers, not stand around and watch me shoot… but don’t worry, we will do this together!   Each Moment-Driven Workshop participant will leave with a fresh set of tools, a ton of inspiration, and an edited website portfolio.  I also offer Mentor Sessions if you’d like to work one-on-one!

Thanks, everyone, and Happy New Year!
