Chicago Pet Photography — Luxury Portraits for Pets and Their People

woman with her dog portrait, by Chicago Pet Photographer Candice Cusic Photography

Choosing a pet photographer in Chicago isn’t just about finding someone who loves animals — it’s about finding a professional who understands connection, emotion, and legacy.

Your pet isn’t a prop.
They’re family.

At Candice C. Cusic Photography, I specialize in luxury pet and family portraiture designed to capture who your pet truly is — and the bond you share — in a way that feels natural, timeless, and deeply personal.

More Than a Photo Session — A Thoughtful Experience

One of the most common things clients tell me before their session is:

“I don’t want to smile at the camera until my face hurts.”

Good news — you don’t have to.

My approach is not about stiff posing or forced expressions. Instead, sessions are calm, intentional, and focused on real moments — quiet connection, gentle interaction, and authentic emotion. The result is imagery that feels like you, not a performance.

You don’t need to know how to pose.
You just need to show up as yourself.

The ONLY Chicago Portrait Studio That Includes a Professional Animal Trainer

Another important difference: I am the only portrait studio in Chicago that hires a professional animal trainer to be present during sessions. I regularly work with experienced trainers from respected organizations such as See Spot Run and Anything Is Pawsible to ensure each animal feels safe, supported, and understood throughout the process.

This makes a remarkable difference — for pets and their people.

Having a trainer on set means:

  • Dogs feel supported and safe
  • Nervous, shy, or high-energy pets are handled with care
  • Sessions move smoothly without pressure
  • You can relax and enjoy the experience

This isn’t about control — it’s about respect. When animals feel calm, real moments unfold naturally, allowing me to focus fully on creating artwork that reflects their true personality.

Pets and People — Because the Relationship Matters

Many pet photography studios focus solely on animals. While those portraits can be beautiful, for many clients the story isn’t complete without the people their pet loves most.

I photograph pets and their people together, honoring the relationship — not just the subject. Whether it’s a shared glance, a familiar gesture, or a quiet moment of closeness, these are the images clients treasure most over time.

Artwork Designed for Your Home, Not Just Your Phone

This experience doesn’t end with a gallery of digital files.

My work is designed to become wall-worthy artwork — custom pieces created to live in your home and grow more meaningful with time. During your design consultation, we’ll thoughtfully select images and formats that reflect your space and your story.

These aren’t trendy images meant to be scrolled past.
They’re legacy pieces meant to be lived with.

A Photographer You Can Trust With What Matters Most

With over four decades of professional photography experience — including work as a former Chicago Tribune photojournalist and Pulitzer Prize–winning team member — I bring a depth of training, intuition, and professionalism that allows clients to fully relax.

You’re not being rushed.
You’re not being boxed into a formula.
You’re being seen.

Chicago Pet Photography, Reimagined

If you’re looking for a Chicago pet photographer who offers:

  • A calm, guided experience
  • Support from a professional animal trainer
  • Portraits that include pets and people
  • Artwork designed to last
  • And imagery rooted in real emotion

I’d love to talk with you about creating something meaningful together.

Because your pet deserves more than a photo.
They deserve artwork.

Avalanche didn’t start life this way.
⠀
Rescued from a hoarding situation through @reddoorshelter, his world was once crowded, uncertain, and far from safe.
⠀
But something beautiful happened—
his foster saw him… and never let him go.
⠀
Avalanche is now home.
⠀
⠀
Seen. Heard. Loved.
    Meet Blanca.
Rescued, but still learning how to feel safe again.
During her animal communication session, Blanca shared a feeling of being abandoned in the rain—until Michelle, her foster mom, found her and brought her to safety.
“I’m scared… but I’m trying.”
She’s waiting for someone to show her she’s finally home.
Blanca and other incredible animals are available for adoption at SAYv Animal Organization (@sayvanimalorg).

The See Hear Love Project is the only project of its kind, combining animal communication and portrait photography to help rescue animals be seen, heard, and adopted.
This is Part 2 of Ramona’s story from The See Hear Love Project™ — a Chicago-based initiative combining animal communication and fine-art photography to help foster animals be seen, heard, and adopted.
Each session begins with an on-camera communication reading followed by a professional portrait session, allowing foster animals to connect with potential adopters through emotion and storytelling.
Ramona’s message is part of a larger mission to bring visibility to animals waiting for homes and to highlight the life-saving power of fostering.

Your best friend at home deserves to be celebrated.
Not just in your camera roll — but in fine art that lives on your wall.
That’s why I hire a professional trainer for every session.
Because your best friend deserves to feel safe, calm, and supported while we create something beautiful.
And because women celebrate everyone else in their lives…
Why not the one who waits for you at home?
For the women who love fiercely — and the dogs who love them right back. 🖤
⠀
That kind of connection deserves to be remembered as art.
From the shoot to the moment it comes together.

During their animal communication reading, Sam and Frodo thanked their foster, Hilary, for saving their life. They also shared something about their past and their hope for the future: no more cages.

This video is part of The See Hear Love Project — the only project that combines animal communication with fine-art photography to help adoptable animals be truly seen and heard.

These bonded bunnies are ready for a safe, loving home where they can stay together.

Sam and Frodo are available for adoption through @onetailatatime.
