Studio Pet Photography vs. Outdoor Pet Photography: Which Is Right for Your Pet?

Fine art photography Chicago black backdrop chicago pet photography

If you’re considering professional portraits of your dog or cat, one of the first decisions you’ll make is whether to choose a studio session or an outdoor session.

The answer isn’t that one is better than the other.

It’s that each creates a different kind of portrait.

Understanding those differences can help you choose the experience that’s right for you and your pet.

Outdoor Sessions Tell the Story of a Place

Outdoor portraits can be beautiful.

A favorite park.

Autumn leaves.

A beach at sunset.

A forest trail.

The environment becomes part of the photograph and often tells the story of places your pet loves to explore.

For families who want nature to play a starring role, outdoor sessions can be a wonderful choice.

Studio Portraits Tell the Story of Your Pet

A studio removes distractions.

Without busy backgrounds competing for attention, every detail becomes more noticeable.

The expression in your dog’s eyes.

The elegant posture of your cat.

The texture of their fur.

Their personality becomes the center of attention.

Years from now, the portrait still feels timeless because it isn’t tied to a particular location or season.

Lighting Is Always Consistent

One of the biggest advantages of studio photography is complete control over light.

Rain doesn’t cancel the session.

Harsh midday sun isn’t a concern.

Changing weather doesn’t affect the final result.

Every portrait is created with carefully controlled lighting designed to flatter your pet and create artwork that will look beautiful for decades.

Every Studio Session Includes a Professional Animal Trainer

Every studio portrait session at Cusic Photo includes a professional animal trainer.

While I focus on creating beautiful portraits, our trainer focuses entirely on your pet’s comfort, confidence, and safety.

Working together allows us to create a relaxed experience where your dog or cat can settle in at their own pace.

We Never Rush

Studio sessions last up to two hours.

That gives your pet plenty of time to explore, take breaks, enjoy treats, and become comfortable in the space.

Some of the best portraits happen after they’ve completely forgotten about the camera.

The Artwork Is Designed for Your Home

After your session, you’ll return for a private design consultation.

Together we’ll choose your favorite portraits and design artwork specifically for your home.

If you’ve photographed your walls beforehand, I’ll digitally display your portraits at their actual size so you can see exactly how different collections will look before making a decision.

Which Is Right for You?

If your favorite memories involve hiking trails, beaches, or wide open spaces, an outdoor session may be the perfect fit.

If you’re looking for timeless artwork that focuses entirely on your pet’s personality, a studio session is often the better choice.

Neither approach is wrong.

The most important thing is creating portraits that celebrate the relationship you share.

Ready to Create Timeless Artwork?

Whether you’re considering portraits of your playful puppy, your senior dog, or your beloved cat, I’d love to help create artwork you’ll treasure for years to come.

“I’m small but mighty. I have feelings too. I’m important too.” — Peanut
⠀
Before Peanut met his foster, he says he felt alone and unneeded.
⠀
Then Michelle took a chance on him.
⠀
“I feel so much healthier. It doesn’t hurt every day. I have a new life now and I’m forever grateful. I won’t take this life for granted.”

THE FIRST FULL-LENGTH FILM FROM THE SEE HEAR LOVE PROJECT™ IS HERE. ❤️
⠀
Meet Nori and Wasabi, a bonded mother and son looking for their forever home together.
⠀
I connected with them telepathically to hear their thoughts, feelings and what they wanted people to know.
⠀
During his communication, Wasabi told me he would give Gabriella, the woman caring for him, all of his toys to make her smile.
⠀
Then he wondered if she needed a ribbon or a string—because those are the things that cheer him up.
⠀
And Nori had her own story to tell.
⠀
This is what The See Hear Love Project™ was created to do: combine animal communication, portraiture and documentary film so animals can participate in telling their own stories.
⠀
We don't simply tell a story about an animal.
⠀
We tell it with them.
⠀
Nori and Wasabi are available for adoption through SAYv Animal Organization. If their story speaks to you, please share it. Somewhere out there is the person who is supposed to find them.
⠀
One animal. One story. One film created to help them find a home.

**YOUR DOG DOESN’T HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO MODEL. 🐾**

We’re the only Chicago portrait studio with a professional animal trainer at every session.

Your dog gets to be a dog. We take care of the rest.

    This is pretty exciting.

**Bored Panda just featured The See Hear Love Project.**

The See Hear Love Project is the world’s only documentary storytelling project told from the animal’s perspective.

Through animal communication, shelter and rescue animals share their own stories, and we create fine-art portraits and documentary films to help them be seen, heard, and adopted.

I’m incredibly grateful to the rescues who trusted us with their animals and their stories:

⠀
George wandered into Owen’s backyard one winter.
⠀
And stayed. ❤️
⠀
During George’s animal communication session, I asked him about his life with Owen.
⠀
Then George told me something wonderfully specific:
⠀
“Cookies in bed make Owen happy.”
⠀
Owen’s reaction says everything. 😂
⠀
These are some of my favorite moments in animal communication. Sometimes what an animal shares is profound. Sometimes it’s heartbreaking.
⠀
And sometimes a cat who wandered into your backyard knows exactly what makes you happy.

The See Hear Love Project™ wouldn't exist without the incredible rescue organizations that trusted me with the stories of the animals in their care.

Thank you for believing in an idea that was a little different, for opening your doors, and for introducing me to some truly unforgettable animals.

I'm so excited to share the latest sizzle reel for The See Hear Love Project™.

Every featured animal received a documentary film, fine-art portraiture, and an animal communication session designed to help people connect with the individual behind the adoption profile.

My hope has always been simple: to tell stories that help more animals find forever homes.

Thank you to every rescue, foster, volunteer, adopter, and supporter who has been part of this journey. This is only the beginning.
Dama arrived at the studio in a wheelchair.
⠀
That was the first thing I noticed.
⠀
It was also the least interesting thing about her.
⠀
What I remember is her determination.
⠀
Her curiosity.
⠀
Her joy.
