Summer’s here! It’s time for open windows, tall glasses of lemonade, and the serenade of crickets at night. With the change of the season comes those sweltering summer days. It’s tough enough to stay cool as a human.
How can we keep our fluffy friends cool and comfortable in the warmer months?
Some warning signs that your pup might be overheated or dehydrated are excessive panting and drooling, lethargic behavior, disorientation, irregular heartbeat, and dry mouth and nose. As our dog’s caretakers we have to pay special attention to the signs.
Here are four ways to keep your dog cool!
1. Take your pup on a summer swimming adventure.
Going to the beach and the pool isn’t just a way for us humans to cool off. There are some great spots in Chicago to ensure your dog has a safe experience. Montrose Harbor dog beach is the only off-leash dog beach in Chicago, where all dogs are required to be vaccinated and healthy. There are plenty of on-leash dog beaches as well, for example Belmont Harbor Dog Beach and Foster Avenue Dog Beach. Another option is to bring your canine to the pool or splash pad, a place like Doggy Paddle Aquatic Center for Dogs who offer a variety of swim services for your pup.
2. Make sure water is always available.
This may seem like it should go without saying, but our dogs don’t have the luxury of reminding us. Bring water and a collapsible bowl, especially if the temperature is a little higher than average. Spray bottles are another good tool in getting your pup cooler. This is a great first step in caring for your overheated dog, Get them hydrated!
3. Wipe a wet cloth on their fur.
Remember that dogs are not able to sweat. Panting is their way of cooling, but that doesn’t mean we can’t help them. Take a damp washcloth and rub their stomach. You can also wipe some cool water on their face and muzzle. Give them some loving!
4. Get your doggy a chilly treat.
There are a lot of great businesses catered to dogs to making dog-friendly ice creams. Fido to Go is a food truck which crafts dog safe ice creams and frozen yogurts. Their day to day schedule and route can be found their social media (@fidotogo). You could even make your own treat. Put some peanut butter in a kong and pop it in the freezer. Once it’s good and frozen your dog has a sweet treat and an entertaining game.
