At the end of every Portrait Experience, something fascinating happens.
Families walk into their ordering appointment convinced they already know which photograph they’re going to choose.
It’s usually the one they remember posing for.
The dog looking at the camera.
Everyone smiling.
Everything perfectly in place.
Then we begin looking through the photographs together.
And almost every time…
They choose a different one.
It Usually Isn’t the Perfect Pose
The portrait clients fall in love with isn’t always technically perfect.
Maybe the dog is looking at their child instead of me.
Maybe Mom is laughing.
Maybe Dad has tears in his eyes because he didn’t realize I captured that moment.
Maybe the puppy is halfway through a kiss.
Those aren’t imperfections.
They’re the reason the photograph matters.
Emotion Wins Every Time
People don’t decorate their homes with perfect poses.
They decorate them with memories.
A photograph that reminds you how your family felt will always outlast one that simply shows everyone looking at the camera.
That’s why I spend so much time observing instead of directing.
I’m waiting for something real.
The Dog Doesn’t Care About the Camera
Dogs don’t spend their lives looking into a lens.
They look at you.
They watch your children.
They wait at the door.
They follow you into the kitchen.
They curl up beside you on the couch.
When I photograph those moments, the portrait immediately becomes more personal.
It looks like your life.
Sometimes It’s the Smallest Moment
I’ve watched families choose a photograph because…
Their dog had one ear flipped inside out.
A little tongue was sticking out.
Their child was whispering into the dog’s ear.
Grandpa was smiling at the dog instead of the camera.
Nothing dramatic happened.
Nothing was planned.
It was simply honest.
Why I Never Rush the Session
If I hurried through a list of poses, we’d probably create several nice photographs.
But we might miss the one.
The one your family points to twenty years from now and says,
“That was so them.”
That’s why my Portrait Experiences are intentionally unhurried.
The best photographs are usually discovered.
Not manufactured.
What I’ve Learned Photographing Families
Over the years I’ve noticed something.
Families almost never choose the photograph because I love it.
They choose it because they recognize something.
A look.
A habit.
A relationship.
A tiny expression they’ve seen thousands of times at home.
That’s what makes a portrait irreplaceable.
It doesn’t simply look like your dog.
It feels like your dog.

Long after your children have grown.
Long after your dog’s muzzle turns gray.
Long after life has changed.
One photograph will stop you in your tracks.
Not because it’s the most perfect.
Because it brings your family rushing back to a moment you thought had already slipped away.
