Chicago Dog Photographer: The Expression I’m Waiting For

A dog showing a relaxed, authentic expression during a portrait session with Chicago dog photographer Candice Cusic.

Every dog has one expression.

Not the one they make when someone squeaks a toy.

Not the one they make because someone is holding a treat over a camera.

The one their family knows immediately.

The look that says…

“There you are.”

That’s the expression I’m waiting for.

Anyone Can Photograph a Dog Looking at the Camera

Getting a dog to look toward the lens isn’t particularly difficult.

Getting a dog to forget the camera exists?

That’s something entirely different.

Because the moment a dog stops performing…

Their personality begins to appear.

That’s when I start taking photographs.

Every Dog Has a Different Way of Saying “I Love You”

Some dogs lean against their people.

Some can’t stop wagging.

Some watch every move their child makes.

Others quietly rest their head on someone’s lap.

Every dog has a different love language.

I want to photograph that.

Not because it’s perfect.

Because it’s true.

The Best Expression Usually Isn’t Looking at Me

Some of my favorite portraits aren’t made when a dog is looking into my camera.

They’re looking at the little girl they’ve grown up beside.

They’re watching Dad throw a tennis ball.

They’re waiting for Mom to smile.

Those photographs tell a much bigger story.

They remind you who your dog loved.

Why I Don’t Rush the Moment

Expressions can’t be scheduled.

They appear when a dog feels comfortable.

That’s one of the reasons every Portrait Experience is intentionally relaxed.

Your dog has time to explore.

Time to play.

Time to simply exist without pressure.

When they stop wondering what’s expected of them, something wonderful happens.

They become themselves.

The Little Things Families Recognize

Sometimes it’s a crooked smile.

A head tilt.

One floppy ear.

The way they wrinkle their nose.

The way they close their eyes while someone scratches behind their ears.

Your family notices those little details immediately.

Those details are your dog.

That’s what I want hanging on your wall.

Moment-Driven Photography™

As a photojournalist, I learned that the best photographs aren’t manufactured.

They’re observed.

The same is true with dogs.

I’m not trying to create a personality.

I’m waiting for it to reveal itself.

Sometimes it happens while we’re talking.

Sometimes while everyone is laughing.

Sometimes during complete silence.

My job is simply to recognize the moment when it arrives.

What I’ve Learned Photographing Dogs

I’ve photographed dogs who never stopped moving.

Dogs who were nervous.

Dogs who were shy.

Dogs who were missing legs.

Puppies.

Seniors.

Rescue dogs.

Champion show dogs.

The one thing every single one had in common?

There was one moment when they completely forgot I was there.

That’s always the photograph their family chooses.

Not because it’s technically perfect.

Because they say the same thing every time.

“That’s exactly who they are.”

That’s the Portrait I Want to Create

Years from now, I don’t want you to remember how well your dog sat.

I don’t want you to remember how many treats we used.

I don’t even want you to remember me.

I want you to look at the portrait on your wall and smile because, for just a second, it feels like your dog is looking back at you the way they always did.

That’s the expression I’m waiting for.

And it’s worth waiting for.

The See Hear Love Project™ wouldn't exist without the incredible rescue organizations that trusted me with the stories of the animals in their care.

Thank you for believing in an idea that was a little different, for opening your doors, and for introducing me to some truly unforgettable animals.

I'm so excited to share the latest sizzle reel for The See Hear Love Project™.

Every featured animal received a documentary film, fine-art portraiture, and an animal communication session designed to help people connect with the individual behind the adoption profile.

My hope has always been simple: to tell stories that help more animals find forever homes.

Thank you to every rescue, foster, volunteer, adopter, and supporter who has been part of this journey. This is only the beginning.

Dama arrived at the studio in a wheelchair.
⠀
That was the first thing I noticed.
⠀
It was also the least interesting thing about her.
⠀
What I remember is her determination.

Her curiosity.

I created The See Hear Love Project to help animals like Blanca.
⠀
Painfully shy. Dumped on a road before the rain came. Nervous around strangers. Ears down. Tail tucked.
⠀
For those new to the project, these are not carefree, well-adjusted animals. Many have experienced neglect, abandonment, fear, or loss.
⠀
Sometimes we only get one photograph when they truly relax.
⠀
Thankfully, we only need one.

Special thanks to @sayvanimalorg for bringing Blanca to The See Hear Love Project.

One of the best things about photographing Ramona is watching everyone react to a pig in the building.

People stopped.

They smiled.

They took selfies.

One gentleman asked if I could wait so he could FaceTime his girlfriend because she loves pigs.

The hardest thing about photographing a pig is that pigs don't stop moving.

Ever.

This portrait worked because Ramona kept walking in circles, allowing us to see her body and face at the same time.

Not shown: Ramona chewed up the paper backdrop on set. Her pig squeal echoed through the studio—loud, proud, and impossible to ignore, just like Ramona herself.

"Thank you

for saving my life."

— Ramona

The See Hear Love Project combines professional photography and animal communication. Each portrait is paired with one of the most powerful messages the animal shared during their communication session.

Some dogs don’t just fit into a family — they become part of its heartbeat.

Eddie was pure joy to photograph with his two favorite people. The connection between them was effortless, loving, and completely real.

These are the moments worth remembering.
    Meet Zeno.

After being surrendered by his owner, Zeno has spent more than a year waiting at Red Door Animal Shelter for someone to choose him.

And somehow, after all this time, he’s still soft. Still trusting. Still hopeful.

Cats like Zeno don’t need perfection. They just need someone willing to see them.
