One of the first things I hear from new clients is usually followed by a nervous laugh.
“You’re probably going to kick us out once you meet our dog.”
Or…
“He never sits still.”
Or my personal favorite…
“She’s completely crazy.”
I always smile.
Because I’ve heard it hundreds of times.
And almost every single family is wrong.
You Don’t Need a Perfect Dog
Somewhere along the way, people started believing professional portraits require a perfectly trained dog.
That couldn’t be further from the truth.
Your dog doesn’t need to know twenty commands.
They don’t need to sit perfectly.
They don’t need to stare at the camera for five minutes.
They just need to be themselves.
In fact, the qualities people apologize for are often the very things that make me fall in love with photographing them.
The goofy smile.
The head tilt.
The zoomies.
The curious sniff.
The way they lean against the people they love.
That’s personality.
And personality always photographs better than perfection.
Why Every Session Includes a Professional Dog Trainer
One of the biggest reasons families are able to relax during their Portrait Experience is because every session includes a professional dog trainer.
This isn’t because we expect difficult dogs.
It’s because every dog deserves someone focused entirely on their comfort and success.
While I concentrate on creating beautiful photographs, our trainer watches your dog’s body language, helps guide their attention when needed, keeps everyone safe, and makes the entire experience enjoyable.
That teamwork allows me to focus on what I do best.
Watching for moments.
Instead of holding squeaky toys or trying to get your dog’s attention every second, I’m looking for the expression that reminds you exactly who they are.
That’s something I couldn’t do if I were trying to photograph and train your dog at the same time.
We Photograph Moments, Not Obedience
Some of my favorite portraits happened when a dog wasn’t sitting at all.
A Labrador leaning into his little boy.
A Golden Retriever laughing while running toward her family.
A senior dog resting against Grandma’s legs.
A puppy racing across the studio before collapsing into a happy grin.
Those moments weren’t mistakes.
They became the photographs.
Dogs communicate with movement.
With curiosity.
With joy.
I want to photograph all of that.
Your Dog Doesn’t Have to Look at the Camera
Another surprise for many families?
Some of my favorite photographs aren’t even looking into the lens.
Maybe your dog is looking up at your daughter.
Maybe they’re watching you.
Maybe they’re resting their head on your shoulder.
Those moments tell a story.
A photograph doesn’t become meaningful because your dog looked at me.
It becomes meaningful because your dog was completely focused on the people they love.
The Best Portraits Happen After Everyone Relaxes
One of the biggest advantages of a full Portrait Experience is that we aren’t racing the clock.
Your dog has time to explore.
Your children have time to laugh.
You have time to stop worrying about whether everything is going perfectly.
That’s usually when everything actually becomes perfect.
Not because everyone finally followed directions.
Because everyone forgot they were being photographed.
What I’ve Learned Photographing Dogs
After years of photographing dogs, I’ve learned something that surprises almost every client.
The photograph they choose for their wall is rarely the one where the dog sat perfectly.
It’s usually the one where they recognize their dog.
The crooked smile.
The playful expression.
The look they give only their family.
The quiet moment when they rest beside the people they love.
That’s the portrait that matters.
Not because it’s perfect.
Because it’s true.
