Every year, families ask me if I offer mini sessions.
The answer surprises some people.
I don’t.
Not because I think mini sessions are bad.
In fact, they can be wonderful for families who need a quick holiday card or an updated portrait.
But that’s not the experience I set out to create.
My goal has never been to photograph what your family looks like for fifteen minutes.
My goal is to tell the story of the people—and pets—you love most.
Your Family Deserves More Than a Time Slot
Some of the most meaningful photographs I’ve ever created happened after everyone stopped thinking about having their picture taken.
The children forgot there was a camera.
Mom stopped worrying about everyone’s hair.
Dad stopped trying to get the dog to sit.
The dog stretched out on the floor and finally relaxed.
Then someone laughed.
A child hugged the dog without being asked.
The dog rested their head on someone’s lap.
Those are the photographs families choose for their walls.
Those moments can’t be scheduled.
They have to unfold naturally.
Dogs Need Time to Become Themselves
Dogs don’t understand calendars or fifteen-minute appointments.
When they arrive at my studio, they’re experiencing a brand-new environment.
They sniff.
They explore.
They figure out where they are.
Then something changes.
Their shoulders soften.
Their tail relaxes.
Their curiosity replaces uncertainty.
That’s when their true personality begins to appear.
I don’t want to photograph a dog who’s still wondering where they are.
I want to photograph the dog their family knows and loves.
Why Every Portrait Session Includes a Professional Dog Trainer
One of the biggest differences between my Portrait Experience and a traditional photo session is that every session includes a professional animal trainer.
People are often surprised by that.
They assume the trainer is there because their dog needs obedience training.
That couldn’t be further from the truth.
Our trainer isn’t there to make your dog “behave.”
They’re there to help your dog feel confident, engaged and successful throughout the session.
While the trainer captures your dog’s attention, watches for signs of stress and helps create natural expressions, I’m free to focus entirely on what matters most—your family.
Instead of constantly squeaking toys, handing out treats or worrying about where the dog is looking, I can watch for connection.
The glance between a child and their dog.
A spontaneous kiss.
A shared laugh.
A quiet moment on the couch.
Those are the photographs you can’t create if the photographer is also trying to be the dog trainer.
Having two professionals working together allows us to create a calm, enjoyable experience for everyone.
Children Need Time Too
Children aren’t much different from dogs.
They need time to settle in.
To laugh.
To explore.
To stop wondering whether they’re doing everything correctly.
Some of my favorite portraits happen because a child forgets I have a camera in my hands.
Instead of saying “cheese,” they’re whispering something funny into their dog’s ear.
Those are the moments that become family treasures.
We Create an Entire Story
A mini session is usually designed to produce one or two wonderful photographs.
My Portrait Experience is designed to tell your family’s story.
During your session we’ll create:
- Beautiful portraits of your dog
- Portraits of each family member with your dog
- The entire family together
- Individual children’s portraits
- Parents with the dog
- Natural moments that unfold throughout the day
By the time you leave, we’ve documented an entire chapter of your family’s life—not just a single image.
What I’ve Learned Photographing Families
After decades as a photojournalist and years photographing dogs and families, I’ve learned one simple truth.
The photograph everyone falls in love with is almost never the one we planned.
It’s the one we discovered.
The unexpected grin.
The muddy paw.
The child who couldn’t stop giggling.
The dog who decided to curl up next to Grandma.
Those photographs aren’t accidents.
They’re the result of slowing down.
Of allowing people and dogs to simply be together.
The Portraits You’ll Treasure Most Haven’t Happened Yet
One day your children will be grown.
Your dog will have a gray muzzle.
Your family’s routines will look completely different.
The photographs you treasure won’t remind you that everyone stood still for fifteen minutes.
They’ll remind you how it felt to love one another during this season of your lives.
That’s why I don’t offer mini sessions.
Because the best family stories deserve more than a quick appointment.
They deserve the time to unfold.
