“Do we really need a dog trainer?”
Absolutely.
In fact, I wouldn’t photograph dogs any other way.
People are sometimes surprised to learn that every Portrait Experience at Cusic Photo includes a professional dog trainer, even if their dog has years of obedience training.
The trainer isn’t there because your dog is “bad.”
They’re there because your dog deserves an experience designed entirely around their success.
And so do you.
Your Dog Doesn’t Need to Be Perfect
The first thing I tell every family is this:
Please don’t worry if your dog doesn’t sit perfectly.
You don’t need to apologize because your puppy jumps.
Or because your rescue is nervous.
Or because your senior dog prefers to lie down.
Dogs aren’t robots.
They’re family.
I don’t want to photograph perfect obedience.
I want to photograph your dog’s personality.
Two Professionals. Two Different Jobs.
During your Portrait Experience, there are two professionals working together.
The dog trainer’s job is to care for your dog.
My job is to tell your family’s story.
Those are two completely different responsibilities.
While our trainer watches your dog’s body language, keeps them engaged, rewards them, and helps them feel comfortable, I’m free to focus on the moments unfolding in front of me.
I’m watching your daughter laugh when your dog gives her a kiss.
I’m noticing your husband smile without realizing it.
I’m waiting for your dog to lean against Grandma’s leg.
Those moments disappear if I’m constantly trying to squeak toys, toss treats or keep a dog from wandering off.
A Relaxed Dog Creates Better Portraits
Dogs tell us how they’re feeling long before they bark.
A tucked tail.
Yawning.
Looking away.
Lip licking.
A sudden burst of excitement.
Our trainer recognizes those subtle signals and adjusts the session accordingly.
Sometimes your dog needs a short break.
Sometimes they need to play.
Sometimes they simply need a minute to process a new environment.
That’s okay.
Some of the best portraits happen after that pause.
Safety Is Always the Priority
Portrait sessions should be fun.
They should also be safe.
