Spend just a few minutes with a Chihuahua, and you’ll quickly realize something.
They have absolutely no idea they’re the smallest dog in the room.
They walk with confidence, watch everything happening around them, and often believe they’re responsible for keeping their favorite people safe. It’s one of the many reasons they’re such a joy to photograph.
As a Chicago pet photographer, I’ve learned that while Chihuahuas are famous for their tiny size, the photographs families treasure most have nothing to do with how small they are.
They capture the enormous personality living inside that little body.
Small in Size, Big in Heart
Chihuahuas are one of the oldest dog breeds in the Americas and one of the most recognizable in the world.
They’re intelligent.
Loyal.
Curious.
And often deeply devoted to the people they love.
Many form incredibly close bonds with their families, happily spending their days curled up in a lap one moment and confidently investigating every sound in the house the next.
That combination of affection and confidence makes every Chihuahua wonderfully unique.
What I’ve Learned Photographing Chihuahuas
One thing I’ve noticed after photographing Chihuahuas is how expressive they are.
Their ears seem to have a language all their own.
Their eyes constantly check in with the people they trust.
Some arrive ready to explore every inch of the studio.
Others prefer to stay close until they decide everything feels safe.
Neither approach is better.
It’s simply part of who they are.
Some of my favorite portraits happen after they realize there’s nothing to worry about. Their body relaxes, their ears perk up, and suddenly the playful, confident Chihuahua their family knows appears in front of the camera.
Those are the moments I wait for.
Every Chihuahua Has Their Own Story
Despite their reputation, Chihuahuas aren’t all the same.
Some are bold and fearless.
Some are quiet observers.
Some love being the center of attention.
Others are happiest tucked safely beside the person they love most.
That’s why I never photograph stereotypes.
I photograph individuals.
Because years from now, you won’t simply remember having a Chihuahua.
You’ll remember your Chihuahua—the one whose personality could never be replaced.

The tiny puppy who fit in one hand eventually grows older.
