If you share your home with three dogs, you’ve probably wondered if a professional portrait is even possible.
Maybe one never stops moving.
One refuses to look at the camera.
And the third is convinced everyone should be playing instead.
I hear it all the time.
“I don’t think you’ll ever get the three of them together.”
The truth is, photographing three dogs isn’t about getting three perfect poses at exactly the same moment. It’s about understanding each dog’s personality and creating an experience where those personalities naturally come together.
Some of my favorite portraits have featured three dogs because they tell a much bigger story than a single portrait ever could.
Every Dog Has a Different Role
One is usually the confident leader.
One is the clown.
One quietly watches everything happening around them.
Those relationships are fascinating to photograph because they already exist long before the session begins. My job isn’t to create them—it’s to recognize them when they happen.
Sometimes the perfect photograph isn’t when all three dogs are staring into the camera.
Sometimes it’s the way one gently leans against another.
The playful glance between siblings.
Or the patient older dog watching the youngest member of the family explore the studio.
Those are the moments that become meaningful years later.

One of the biggest reasons families are surprised by how smoothly a three-dog session goes is because every portrait session at Cusic Photo includes a professional animal trainer.
While I stay behind the camera looking for genuine expressions and authentic interactions, our trainer helps guide the dogs, keeps everyone engaged, and works with each personality individually.
That allows me to focus entirely on storytelling instead of juggling treats, squeaky toys, or asking dogs to sit over and over again.

We Photograph More Than One Setup
Many people imagine that the goal is one photograph with all three dogs looking perfectly at the camera.
Of course we hope to create that image.
But that’s only the beginning.
During your session we’ll also photograph:

By the end of the session, you’ve captured the entire story of your family—not just one pose.
Every Personality Matters
Some dogs settle immediately into the studio.
Others need a little time before they feel comfortable.
That’s perfectly normal.
Because I photograph using my Moment-Driven Photography™ approach, I never expect every dog to respond the same way.
Instead of forcing moments, I watch for them.
The head tilt.
The curious glance.
The wagging tail.
The expression that instantly makes you say, “That’s so them.”

What I’ve Learned Photographing Three Dogs
After photographing countless multi-dog families over the years, I’ve learned something surprising: three dogs often make sessions more interesting, not more difficult.
Each dog brings a different energy, and together they create moments that could never be planned. One might make everyone laugh. Another keeps the group grounded. The third waits quietly until the perfect expression appears.
Those little interactions are impossible to script, and they’re often the photographs families treasure most. They aren’t just portraits of three dogs—they’re portraits of the relationships that made your house feel like home.
