That’s the story I’m looking for every time I pick up my camera.

People sometimes worry before their session.
“My dog won’t sit still.”
“They’re a little shy.”
“They’re too excited.”
“They never look at the camera.”
The truth is, none of those things determine whether we’ll create beautiful photographs.

Every Session Includes a Professional Dog Trainer
One of the things that makes my portrait experience different is that every session includes a professional dog trainer.
While our trainer focuses on helping your dog feel comfortable, confident and successful, I’m able to do something incredibly important.
I get to watch.
Instead of constantly trying to get your dog’s attention, I can focus entirely on their expressions, body language and personality.
That partnership allows us to create photographs that feel genuine instead of forced.
My Background Changed the Way I Photograph Dogs
Before becoming a full-time pet photographer, I spent more than a decade as a photojournalist for the Chicago Tribune.
Photojournalism taught me that the most meaningful photographs aren’t manufactured.
They’re observed.
You wait.
You pay attention.
You anticipate.
Then, for just a fraction of a second, everything comes together.
That’s exactly how I photograph dogs today.
I’m not waiting for perfection.
I’m waiting for truth.
The Story Is Already There
Every dog tells their story differently.
Some make you laugh every few seconds.
Some quietly sit beside the people they trust most.
Some never stop moving.
Others simply want to lean against your leg.
None of those personalities are better than another.
They’re simply different.

What I’ve Learned Photographing Dogs
I’ve learned that dogs never worry about whether they’re photogenic.
They don’t wonder if they’re posing correctly.
They don’t care if one ear is up or both ears are down.
They simply show up exactly as they are.
Maybe that’s why the best dog portraits feel so honest.
They remind us what it looks like to live without pretending.
